Hello, I’m Michael Sommerlad.
I’m an Australian poultry consultant, specialising in organic and free range pastured production since 2001.
I began my life-long fascination with poultry when I was 13 years old, and have enjoyed a diverse range of experiences: from backyard poultry keeping through to working in the intensive poultry industry. Along the way I have been privileged to be generously mentored by “old-timer” poultry producers, and now, whether I like it or not, I find myself in that category. It’s my hope that this blog may be helpful to future generations of poultry producers.
I grew up on a sheep and orchard property at Tenterfield, in the New England region of northern NSW, and have worked in Australia’s rural industries for most of my life. I have always been interested in animal husbandry and regenerative agriculture, with my enduring passion remaining in poultry breeding and genetics, particularly now as it relates to developing specific poultry products for the growing non-conventional market.
